CHILDREN were given an early Christmas treat when a host of cartoon characters visited a hospital ward.

Peppa Pig, Jerry the mouse and Disney princess Snow White paid young patients at Sunderland Royal Hospital a visit.

The group of characters were at the Kayll Road hospital to spread Christmas cheer and hand out sweet treats to youngsters.

Organiser Amy Pink, boss of promotional business Pink Inc Entertainment, said: “It’s just a nice little treat and surprise for the kids.

“I do it every year, and it’s always good. The kids really enjoy seeing the characters.

“It’s always a surprise for them, and it brightens up their day – and I enjoy doing it too.”

Amy, clad in a Peppa Pig costume for the visit, spent time chatting to the youngsters and posed for photographs.

Patient Stephen McBride, nine, said: “I’ve never met anyone like that before, but I wasn’t surprised when they came in.

“I was expecting them, so I was looking forward to it, and they gave me some sweets, which was nice.”

He added that his little brother Carter, five, would have enjoyed the event.

“He would have loved it,” said the Southwick Primary School pupil. “He likes the characters, so he would have really enjoyed it and been surprised.”

Tommy Lee Whitten, 11, who had travelled all the way from Leicester to have grommets removed from his ears, was cheered up by the visit.

Mum Tracy Gray said: “It’s a lovely thing they do. I was a bit shocked when I saw them, but it was lucky that they came on the day that we were here.”
