Fire damage to shops in Keighley Avenue, Downhill, Sunderland.

FIREFIGHTERS were called to a blaze in the roof of a Sunderland newsagent.

A fire in a large amount of rubbish in the back yard of the premises in Keighley Avenue spread and set the roof alight.

Crews from Sunderland Central, Fulwell, Washington and Hebburn stations were called to the Downhill shop shortly after 10.30pm on Monday to tackle the blaze.

The crews removed tiles from the roof to gain access to the void, which is shared among all five business premises in the row.

A spokeswoman for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters had to force open the electrical shutters at the front of the shop so they could get in to make sure the fire had not spread.

No one was injured in the blaze, which is under investigation.
