COUNCIL chiefs have thrown their support behind Sunderland’s lesbian, gay, and transgender (LGBT) community by raising the rainbow flag.

The annual event, at the Civic Centre, is in recognition of the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (Idaho) which takes place today. A flag was also raised at the Stadium of Light.

Members of the LGBT Equality Forum, joined the deputy mayor in raising the flag at the civic centre.

Ryan Houston, chairman of Sunderland Pride, said: “It’s fantastic to see a group like SAFC supporting Idaho. As such a powerful figure, it’s great to see their attitude towards equality and diversity being showcased with an event such as this.

“It’s also fantastic to see the support from the mayor’s office and deputy mayor.”
