HOUGHTON will hail the ale once again this year – after it was revealed the town’s successful beer festival will return.
Hundreds of people turned out for last year’s extravaganza, with scores of ales on offer and performances from popular bands such as Hetton group Dennis.
Organised by the town’s Round Table, a number of charitable causes are set to benefit from the event, which is now becoming a fixture on the Wearside events calendar.
Bereavement charity 4Louis, the Great North Air Ambulance and Cancer Research UK have been announced as the chosen charities to be supported by this year’s celebration.
About £4,000 was raised last year and handed on to worthy groups.
Maxim Breweries, based in Rainton Bridge in Houghton, will once again be providing limited edition ales for the event.
John Bloomfield, vice-chairman of the Round Table, said: “The interest in the festival has once again been great.
“About 600 people came over the weekend last year so we hope to do the same numbers again.”
A number of sponsors are already on board, such as Henderson Insurance Ltd, of Silksworth. Peter Adamson, of the firm, said: “Last year’s beer festival was a fantastic event that raised a quite a bit of money for some great causes, so how could we not get involved once again?”
Bands set to play the festival will be announced later this month, as will a major sponsor.
