DRINKERS are today raising their glasses as an ale festival gets into full swing.

Now in its second year, Houghton Beer Festival is hoping to capitalise on the success of its inaugural event in 2012 and make the gathering a fixture on Wearside’s spring entertainments calendar.

Hundreds are expected to descend on Welfare Hall, in Station Road, and sample tipples brewed both locally and nationally.

Backed by Maxim Brewery, which is based at Rainton Bridge, ales such as Jarrow Brewery’s Red Ellen, Blue Monkey’s BG Sips and Sandford Orchard’s Bumbleberry cider will be on offer to drinkers.

The fun continues today with the afternoon session from noon until 5pm, with music and food ahead of a sold out evening session at which Hetton band Dennis are set to perform. Proceeds go to charities 4Louis, the Great North Air Ambulance and Cancer Research UK.
