THE birth of her first baby should have been Sharna Gardner’s happiest moment.

But there were tears of sadness when the 15-year-old held Rhkiya Mae for the first time yesterday.

Her partner, Grant Adams, 17, originally from Pennywell, Sunderland, died after being injured in a tragic accident at his home in South Shields, in June.

Yesterday Sharna gave birth at South Tyneside District Hospital to the couple’s baby, at 9.55am, who weighed 8lbs 3ozs.

His aunt Michelle Kelly, 33, said: “Mother and baby are doing really well. It is such an emotional time for us all as we are all so happy but it’s also sad as Grant isn’t here to see his new baby. It’s just really emotional.”

Grant tripped and fell into a sunbed causing one of the glass tubes to pierce his neck, before falling down the stairs.
