DOZENS of guests at a city centre hotel had to be evacuated in the early hours after a water pipe burst.

It happened at the four-storey Travelodge building, in Low Row, Sunderland, after a pipe fractured in a water tank of the plant room, which is on the third floor.

Hotel staff alerted the fire brigade after water began to leak into three separate rooms on the second floor.

A crew from Sunderland Central fire station, who were at a nearby property dealing with an alarm call out, arrived on the scene after the hotel’s alarm went off.

Officers wrapped the pipe with tape to stop the leak.

About 50 hotel guests were then taken to another hotel.

It happened shortly after 2am this morning.
