A GREAT, great grandmother celebrated a century of her life, surrounded by her loving family.

Maria Best, known to friends as Ria, was born in May 1914, just months before the outbreak of the First World War.

Ria, who was married to the late businessman Les Best, was well known in the Easington Lane area as her and her husband ran an electrical goods business with outlets in the village and South Hetton.

The pair ran the business before retiring when they were in their 70s.

Mr Best died 18 years ago.

Staff and fellow residents at The Laurels Care Home, in Hetton, where mum-of-four Ria now lives, put on a birthday party for her which was attended by more than 20 of her relations.

Mayor of Hetton, Councillor Tony Richardsdon was also present to hand over flowers to Ria, a former member of the Hetton Inner Wheel group.

Her daughter Maureen Hughes, 78, said: “She’s had a great day even though she is not in the best of health.”
