FOOTBALL-MAD charity workers have been singled out and celebrated by a drive to promote grass roots fans.

Barclays You Are Football campaign praises supporters of the beautiful game - including Sunderland-based charity, North East Sport Community Interest Company (CIC).

Founder and former construction industry worker Peter Curtis used his redundancy money to set up the not-for-profit group in 2009. NE Sport now works with schools and community groups across the region and has created jobs for six young people.

Loyal Sunderland AFC supporter Peter said: “It is basically recognition of our work within the community and You Are Football is a celebration of any on who does a lot of work in the community.

“They got in touch and said, ‘we have seen your organisation and we think it is great’.

We did an interview over the phone and they did a story on us.”

The charity, in Hendon, which relies solely on grants and funding, eventually hopes to have its own sports facility.

Peter added: “I basically wanted young people to have something to do.”
