TRAGEDY ... footballer Karl David Carson.

A FOOTBALL club has paid tribute to a man found dead at the bottom of cliffs after escaping from a police car.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is continuing to investigate the death of Karl Carson, who had been arrested after a fight broke out in a pub car park after an engagement party.

Karl was a popular footballer who played for Boldon CA in the Wearside league outfit.

His manager, Jason Jones, said the 26-year-old, from Boldon Colliery, would always put in “100 per cent effort”.

In a tribute left on Facebook, Jason wrote: “He was a character in the dressing room and when things weren’t going well, he lifted spirits and made people believe that they could turn the game around and win the game.

“Karl David Carson thank you for everything mate. You will be sorely missed by everyone at the club. RIP X.”

Karl was one of three brothers who played football.

Younger brother David, 18, recently signed for Championship side Blackburn Rovers after being on the books of both Sunderland and Newcastle.

A spokesman for the Lancashire outfit said: “The club would like to offer its condolences to David and his family at this very sad time.”

Karl had been to an engagement party at the Marsden Grotto pub in South Shields.

A fight broke out and Karl was detained in a police car. As officers went to arrest a second man, Karl escaped.

His body was found at the bottom of nearby cliffs.

The matter has now been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).
