MORE than 80 fines were handed out to litter louts and dog owners who allowed their pets to foul the streets during a one-month period.
The penalty tickets were served by Durham County Council’s neighbourhood wardens, as they worked alongside Police Community Support Officers to take out enforcement action.
Last month, the council issued nine fines for fouling, 48 for littering and 27 for failing to comply with a litter clearing notice, where warnings had been given about waste in their yard or garden.
Of those, 13 were given out in Chester-le-Street for littering, seven of which were for cigarette litter in the town centre, and nine were given in Peterlee for littering.
Ian Hoult, the council’s neighbourhood protection manager, said: “Littering and dog fouling are of great concern to local people and we are determined to continue to tackle those responsible.
“To help us achieve this, we are calling on residents to come forward with any information they have regarding the identities of possible offenders.”
