Festival of sport aims to get Sunderland moving

SPORT newbies will be able to try their hand at taster activities including fencing, badminton and table tennis, at a community sports festival this weekend.

The free event – aimed at getting people more active – will take place at Farringdon Community Academy on Saturday between 10.30am and 12.30pm.

Activities on the day will be provided by local community sports clubs and people will have the opportunity to sign up to an eight-week beginner programme.

University of Sunderland and SAFC Foundation of Light will be at the event with their interactive Urban Athlete and football speed cage. Councillor John Kelly, Sunderland City Council’s portfolio holder for public health, wellness and culture said: “The morning is all about having fun and trying something
new.

“Physical activity and sport is at the heart of keeping the city healthy.”
