SUNDERLAND’S Mayor held a special church service to celebrate his appointment.
The annual Civic Service took place at St Chad’s Church in Charter Drive, Sunderland, yesterday.
It was to mark Councillor Stuart Porthouse, Labour member for St Chad’s ward, taking over the reins as Mayor of Sunderland last month.
When the former mining engineer took over, his wife, Marie, became Mayoress for the civic year.
Pupils from Farringdon Academy sang If I Were A Butterfly at the service, which was presided over by the Mayor’s Chaplain, Reverend Jeremy Chadd.
After the service, those in attendance were invited to the church’s community hall where they enjoyed refreshments and a buffet.
