Fancy swapping Sunderland for Spain? This SAFC bar needs a new owner

CAN you hear The Roker Roar calling from sunny Spain?

A British bar owner is looking for someone willing to follow their dream to the palm-fringed island of Majorca.

Pennywell resident Keith Hammond has been running the sports bar in party resort of Magaluf for three and a half years, but now he is looking for a buyer to take the beachside town’s only SAFC bar off his hands.

The 37-year-old used his life savings to snap up the boozer during a holiday at the Spanish resort.

The loyal Black Cats fan said: “I’ve got a lot of friends who live in Majorca, and I ended up getting friendly with the owner.

“It was originally a Sheffield Wednesday bar.”

But former SAFC season ticket holder Keith quickly gave the pub a red-and-white makeover and decked it out with Black Cats memorabilia.

Now it is a hit with holidaying Mackems. “A lot of people come over just for the bar, and match days are really busy,” he said.

“People do make the effort to come to the bar when they’re here.”

As well as showing all SAFC games, Keith also pulls in the British holidaymakers with broadcasts of the soaps and reality TV shows.

“We basically cater for the audience,” he said.. “We have the SAFC matches on live, and then when the families are in, they can put what they want on.”

Keith flies out there once a month during high season, while a manager who lives in the resort looks after day-to-day business.

However, Keith, who also runs a bus company in Ferryhill, County Durham, feels the Roar needs an owner based there full time.

The Roker Roar, which is at the bottom of Magaluf’s “party strip” of bars and clubs, opens from April to October, but Keith thinks investment in nearby hotels will see the bar’s new owners opening its doors all year round.

“It is a nice-looking bar in a good location, which counts for everything,” he said. “It is basically for someone who wants to live the dream.

“I’ve always had the bus company, but the opportunity came up, and a lot of people would wait all their lives and not get an opportunity like that.”

Anyone interested in becoming landlord – or landlady – of The Roker Roar can contact Keith through its Facebook page.
