Famous Durham bar and restaurant faces losing alcohol licence after under-age sales

A CITY bar’s licence is under threat after staff allegedly sold alcohol to under-age customers.

Durham Police are applying for a review of the licence for La Spaghettata and Fabio’s Bar, which occupy the ground and first floor of a building in Saddler Street, Durham City.

In a report to Durham County Council’s Licensing Committee, the police say there have been two incidents of public disorder in Fabio’s in the past 12 months.

Earlier this year Fabio’s failed two under-age test purchases of alcohol.

The report points out Fabio’s was the subject of a previous review in November 2012, for similar breaches. The earlier review was resolved when Fabio’s management agreed to put its house in order.

For the second review, Durham Police is urging the committee to take ‘strong action’, including licence suspension.

Fabio’s has support from two nearby businesses, Ribchester’s accountancy firm and The Shakespeare pub. Both have written letters to the committee describing Fabio’s as a good neighbour.

The committee is due to consider the review in the council chamber in Spennymoor on September 9.
