A SUSPECTED car fire caused congestion on the A1 between Durham and Chester-le-Street on Saturday morning.

Two crews from County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service were dispatched to the northbound carriageway at 10.43am.

It turned out that an oil spillage in the engine well was responsible for the smoke and the vehicle was not actually on fire.
