FIREFIGHTERS were called to Durham Police’s headquarters after an explosion early this morning.

It is thought a lithium battery in a storage area overheated before blowing up, blasting several windows out at the force’s control centre at Aykley Heads.

Two officers were nearby when the battery exploded but were unhurt.

Firefighters, along with hazardous materials specialists, spent almost three hours containing the blaze and ensuring the area was safe for staff to return to work.

Chief Superintendent Ivan Wood said: “Fortunately the explosion was not in an operational area, so it is still business as usual.”
