AN elderly woman was treated in hospital after her car overturned on the A182 road between Shiney Row and Herrington Burn.
The victim had to be cut free from the silver Nissan Note following the crash, which also involved a parked car, at 2.15pm.
Witness Frankie Maguire, 19, said: “The car swerved and she just went flying 7ft in the air, and then the car started spinning when it landed. I quickly ran over and rang an ambulance and checked that she was breathing all right.”
The woman was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.
A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said: “At 2.18pm police were called to a collision involving a car which had overturned.
“It happened between Mill Terrace and Hedworth Terrace in Shiney Row.”
