A DRIVER had to be cut free from his car after it flipped onto its side on the A19.
The man was driving southbound on the A19 when the accident happened just before the A1231 Wessington Way slip-road.
Drivers have had to be diverted off the A19 at the junction while the emergency services work to clear the crash site.
Ambulances crews were scrambled to the scene and the woman was taken to hospital after with an arm injury and minor cuts and bruises.
Northumbria Police said a stretch of the A19 was closed for just under two hours while the rescue operation took place.
The incident happened just before 11am today, with the road re-open by 1pm.
