Drag queen’s lip hair and lipstick

Sunderland Drag artist Nova Gina is growing a moustache for Movember.

Sunderland Drag artist Nova Gina is growing a moustache for Movember.

ONE of Sunderland’s most flamboyant drag queens has binned his razor to raise cash for male cancer charities.

Nova Gina, a regular fixture on the city’s burgeoning gay scene, will go without shaving this month as part of Movember.

During this month, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in the UK and around the world.

The aim is to raise vital funds for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

Those taking part in the campaign effectively become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November and through their actions and words raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often-ignored issue of men’s health.

Last year, more than 854,000 men let their top lip hair grow around the world got on board, raising a staggering £79.3million.

“The ‘tache is getting there,” said Nova.

“I’ve been growing it for a while now but people are saying “Is that it?”

“Movember seems to be getting a lot more popular and that’s great because it’s a really good cause.”

Nova appears at Gatsby, in Derwent Street, Sunderland, every Tuesday and will be involved in a special event as part of Movember celebrations on Tuesday, November 27.

“I haven’t really got a target for how much to raise, I’m just going to see how it goes but hopefully it will be a lot,” added Nova.

“I’m going to get collection buckets out at all of the events that I do and see what happens.”
