ALMOST 50 emergency calls were made to report fires during last night’s firefighters strike.
Between 6.30pm and 11pm on Friday, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue service received 49 999 reports.
Fire crews from across the region, including Sunderland’s stations, tackled 25 blazes, four of which involved damaged property.
The remainder were rubbish fires.
During the time of the strike, which more than 29 crews and supporters took part in, firefighters were called to Newcastle Road, Fulwell.
A four metre by three metre stable block was set alight, and a gypsy carriage inside was 90 per cent damaged by the flames, and 10 percent damaged by smoke.
The stable was severely damaged by the fire, which was extinguished using one hose reel.
No one was injured.
