Nissan Sports and Social club have teamed up with Sunderland Astronomical Society to stage Jupiter Nights.

Nissan and Sunderland Astronomical Society (SAS) has teamed up to help Wearsiders discover the night skies.

Jupiter Nights: An Introduction to Stargazing will take place on February 2, to coincide with BBC TV’s Stargazing Live – presented by Professor Brian Cox – and will feature a number of astronomical attractions.

Powerful telescopes will unveil the giant planet Jupiter and its four largest moons as well as the Orion Nebula, star clusters including The Seven Sisters and The Beehive, as well as other wonders of the universe.

Aimed at stargazers of all ages, the event will also feature an inflatable planetarium, interactive presentations with a question and answer sessions, a craft area and hot food and drink stalls.

Hosted by Nissan Sport and Leisure Complex (NSLC), the night is dedicated to introducing people to stargazing at a basic level.

NSLC general manager Gary Collin, who has been working with SAS for more than a year on this project, said: “This event is definitely a 10 on the one to 10 wonder-scale.

“How often do we get the opportunity, as a family, to show our children the wonders of the universe and have access to so many dedicated expert scientists and astronomers in one place?”

Paul Meade, from SAS, said: “The Sunderland Astronomical Society is extremely happy and excited to be helping Nissan Sports and Leisure Complex in the organisation of what we all hope will turn into an annual stargazing experience for not only local astronomers, but also, and more importantly, for all members of the public, both young and old.

“The winter night skies are great to look at and we can show you everything from places where stars are being born all the way to when a star dies. You’ll see Jupiter and some of its 67 known moons as well as our own moon in much more detail than you’ve ever seen it before and much, much more.”
