STORE staff who made a splash for cash have been praised for their fund-raising efforts.
The Mayor of Sunderland, Coun Bob Heron, has hailed Argos staff who raised £1,250 for the Alzehmier’s Society in a swimathon at Sunderland’s Aquatic Centre by covering 37 miles in total.
Coun Heron said: “If they were handing out medals for fund-raising then the Argos staff and their families would deserve golds.”
The charity is one the Mayor has chosen to back during his year in office, and although the Argos’s efforts were separate to his, he went to the pool with wife and Mayoress Juliana to offer support.
He added: “The fight against dementia is a cause that is close to my heart because my late mother had the disease so I know just how brutal it can be.”
Organiser Stephen Snowball, manager of the Sunderland’s High Street West shop, added: “The guys are ready for the next swimathon later this year when we will go the extra mile again.
“Everyone was delighted to take part and thought the Aquatic Centre, who kindly let us use two lanes for free, was fabulous.”
