A MAN who told friends he was worried about getting old died the day before his 60th birthday.
Alan Maddison was found in his bungalow in Parkside Crescent, Seaham, by concerned friends, an inquest heard.
A post-mortem examination found Mr Maddison, whose home was linked to Parkside Garage, died from asphyxiation.
Detective Sergeant Paul Gray told the hearing in Crook: “A friend of Mr Maddison’s former partner became concerned and went to the property on the evening of July 16.
“She was trying his mobile phone and could hear it ringing inside the bungalow, but there was no answer.
“Another friend attended and they removed a window to gain entry.”
Det Sgt Gray said no note was found, nor relevant information on two mobile phones or his computer and confirmed there was no third party involvement.
He added: “He had been jet skiing the previous Saturday, but he had told friends he was depressed at the thought of getting older.”
Coroner Andrew Tweddle said: “Having read the papers in this case and seen the photographs, it is clear Mr Maddison must have used considerable planning and forethought for him to be found as he was.
“The only conclusion I can come to is he intended the result of those actions.”
Verdict: Took his own life.
