Delays warning after crash on A19 Hylton Bridge in Sunderland

DRIVERS faced length delays after a pile up on the A19.

A number of cars were involved in the smash on the Hylton Bridge this afternoon.

Police, paramedics and fire crews were called to the area near the A183 sliproad, shortly before 3pm, after a Vauxhall Marina, Vauxhall Zafira, a BMW, Ford Zetec and a Ford Focus collided.

A number of people had to be helped from their cars, but they are not thought to have suffered any serious injuries.

One person was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital for a check-up for minor injuries.

Firefighters from Washington station helped make the road safe, while paramedics treated injured drivers and passengers at the roadside.

Police closed the northbound carriageway for about an hour and traffic was diverted onto the A1231 sliproad.

A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police: “Police received a report of an accident involving a number of vehicles at 2.49pm.

“There are not believed to be reports of any serious injuries.

“Police and paramedics are at the scene.”

Tailbacks of traffic stretched back from the A1231 to the A183, while the damaged cars were recovered.

All three lanes of the road were re-opened by 4.20pm.
