BIG-HEARTED George Jackson has cleaned up when it comes to community spirit.

George got so fed up with rubbish around his Washington home that he took it upon himself to organise a big tidy-up.

With tight budgets leaving Gentoo and the city council unable to provide a skip, George rang his old friends at city recycling firm Alex Smiles, and organised one for himself.

Then he rounded-up a team of volunteers from the area and set about taking on the fly-tippers.

“I wanted to put together a team of helpers to collect all the rubbish that was lying about, that people could not afford to pay the council to take away,” he said.

“Nobody had done anything about it, so I rang Alex Smiles and asked if they would let us have a skip. Myself and a team of helpers went out and collected up the fridges and the three-piece suites that had been dumped in the area, and we soon filled the skip up.

“I want to say a big thank you to Alex Smiles for providing the skip and to all the people who gave up their time to help.

“It just goes to show what can be achieved if people make the effort.”
