A FAMILY fun day was held to celebrate the revamp of a city community area.

Sunderland Children’s Coalfield Centre hosted a free family event at Barnwell Primary School to show off the newly-refurbished centre.

Activities included face-painting, cake decorating and football, with parents and carers enjoying the arts and crafts area with their young ones.

Visitors also had the chance to learn circus skills with members of organisation, Circurama.

The event was arranged to showcase the centre, which is open throughout the year providing activities designed for children between the age of birth and five, and their parents and carers.

Barnwell is one of three main centres used to deliver activities by Sunderland Children’s Coalfield, along with other buildings in the area such as libraries.

Councillor Pat Smith, the council’s portfolio holder for children’s services, said: “Our children’s centres are a real asset to the city’s families, so it’s great that we’re able to continually improve the services they provide.”
