A MILESTONE birthday was given a festive twist as community chiefs marked a decade in their base.

More than 250 people gathered at Pennywell Youth Project to mark 10 years in its building.

The event featured a disco, face painting, arts and crafts, tombola and a raffle.

Partygoers could also get into the Christmas spirit by patting a donkey and visiting Santa’s grotto.

Children aged up to 10 received a selection box courtesy of Gentoo.

Young people entertained the crowd, performing a range of songs from up-to-date chart music to Christmas classics.

More than 20 volunteers supported the staff to help run the night.

Cassandra O’Neill, one of the project’s leaders, said: “It was wonderful once again to have the community coming together and having fun.

“We look forward to more in the future.”

She added her thanks to Sunderland Training and Education farm for the loan of the donkeys, which were a great hit with the young people, and the Yorkshire Trading Company and Scott Memorials who helped the group celebrate with a bang with a donation of fireworks set off on the night. Asda and Morrisons also backed the party with contributions.
