YOUNGSTERS braved winter weather to take part in a tree-planting drive.
Dubmire Primary School, in Houghton, teamed up with environmental charity Groundwork North East and Sunderland City Council to plant more than 200 trees at Elba Park.
The project was spearheaded by the authority’s Love Where You Live campaign.
Councillor James Blackburn, cabinet member for city services, said: “Love Where You Live is all about pride and involvement in your community. Planting trees is a great way of sharing and showing that you care.
“We know that there’s a real sense of community pride across all our city.
“We’re delighted that so many people want to work with us to improve their communities and help look after their environment.
“Planting trees is a great way of greening our communities and creating a legacy for future generations to enjoy.”
The trees had been handed to the council as part of a Woodland Trust Tree Pack.
Year 5 pupils helped to plant a range of native species to help in the on-going and exciting development of the park, which lies on the site of the old Lambton Cokeworks between Shiney Row and Burnmoor.
