Children go online for green tips

SCHOOLCHILDREN can learn about reusing and recycling thanks to a new online teaching resource.

Durham County Council’s strategic waste team, together with teaching and education staff, has developed Waste Advice and Guidance for Schools (WAGS) with Candoo the resourceful dog.

The character is made from cans, a plastic bottle, carton, foil and cardboard.

The guidance is aimed at primary schools and as well as helping pupils to learn about the importance of reducing the amount of waste which is produced, it also links in with core curriculum subjects such as maths, literacy and science.

The resource, which is available to all County Durham schools, has been officially launched by Councillor Ossie Johnson, cabinet member for children and young people’s services, and Terry Collins, corporate director for neighbourhood services at with the council.

They were joined at the launch event by a group of 16 children and their teachers from four primary schools.
