MEET Bob Berston – winner of our Father’s Day competition and all-round nice guy.

No matter what happens in life, Bob knows what’s important – family.

The 78-year-old was nominated for the Echo’s “I Love Dad” competition by daughter Kim, 40, who says she couldn’t have asked for a better parent.

She said: “No matter what happens in life, the ups and downs, my dad always makes me smile.

“Every time I go to his house I come out laughing. I genuinely could not have asked for a better dad, or a better childhood.”

Bob and wife Sylvia, 79, raised Kim and sister Jill in Red House, Sunderland.

“From as young as I can remember, my dad has always went through life with a smile on his face,” said Kim. “My life has been fab, dad worked all hours to bring money in to support the family and showed me from a young age what hard work is.

“He had great health up until six years ago when he had a stroke – he initially lost his memory which thankfully returned after a few days. Then, two years ago, he had a heart attack from which he recovered. “Dad now cares and looks after my mam, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s-led dementia. It’s really hard for him to deal with, but he continues to keep smiling every day.”

Bob, who has four grandchildren, will be spending Sunday with the family.

He said: “I can’t believe I’ve won. I’m thrilled.”
