TWO people had a lucky escape when the car they were in caught fire on the A19
The southbound carriageway was shut between the A183 Chester Road and A690 Doxford Park junctions after the vehicle burst into flames.
Two people were inside the vehicle but managed to escape the blaze without injury.
Four fire engines rushed to the scene to put out the fire, which happened shortly before 9am.
Huge tailbacks stretched as far as the Nissan site at Washington.
A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said: “Police were called at 8.50am on Monday about a car on fire on the A19 at New Herrington.
“Two occupants were inside the vehicle but they got out and were uninjured.
“The road was closed southbound temporarily to allow for the fire service to extinguish it.”
