A CAR centre is today counting the cost after a building collapsed at its repair garage.
Firefighters were called to the Snippersgate Car Centre, in South Hetton Road, Easington Lane at 5.30pm yesterday.
Crews from Rainton Bridge and North Moor stations as well as specialist crews from Fulwell and Hebburn attended the scene.
“When the call initially came in we thought it might have been an explosion,” said Rainton Bridge watch manager Andy Trafford.
“But when we got there we saw that part of the front of the garage had completely collapsed.
“It’s very fortunate that there was no-one in the building at the time, because it would have been a different story if there were.”
A structural engineer called out to the scene then deemed that the building had indeed suffered a structural collapse.
The incident happened just after 5.30pm on Monday (MAY 12).
