Budgets still squeezed

ALMOST three-fifths of low income families in the North East say they have got poorer in the past year.

That’s according to figures released by charity Turn2us, who say that despite the economy improving recently, 57 per cent of those surveyed in the North East are worried about their financial situation as they struggle with a combination of falling wages, shorter working hours and rising living costs.

The survey found that on average, working households in the region are forced to spend half of their monthly income on bills and food.
And more than a third say their outgoings outweigh their earnings.
