A BRAVE youngster battling cancer has received recognition for his courage.
Eleven-year-old Lewis Hair, of Hylton Red House, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia last September but has refused to let the illness get him down.
Now Cancer Research UK has handed the Red House Academy pupil a Little Star award after being nominated by his mum.
“I’m really proud of him – he has been through a lot,” said mum Shelley, 30, a learning support assistant at South Tyneside College.
“As soon as I heard about the Little Star Awards I put Lewis forward.
“He’s got another three years of treatment to get through so he’s still got a long way to go, but he’s got an amazing sense of humour which is getting him through it.”
Cancer Research UK’s Little Star Awards, in partnership with TK Maxx, acknowledge the unique challenges faced by youngsters who encounter cancer and raise vital funds for research.
Lewis received a special star-shaped chrome trophy along with a £50 TK Maxx gift card and certificate signed by celebrities including boy band JLS, Olympic hero Mo Farah, England football captain Steven Gerrard and pop star Leona Lewis.
Paul Wadsworth, Cancer Research UK’s spokesperson for the North East said: “Lewis is a true Little Star who richly deserves this accolade.
“We hope to acknowledge the bravery of many more children across the region and are encouraging family and friends to get nominating now.”
Scientists at the Northern Institute for Cancer Research in Newcastle are investigating the rogue cells that fuel acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, the most common type of childhood cancer, which can sometimes come back after treatment.
Thanks to donations Cancer Research UK research is helping to transform the outlook for children with cancer. Today almost three quarters of children survive, compared with around a quarter in the 1960s.
The Little Star Awards are open to all under-18s who have cancer or who have been treated for the disease in the last five years. Siblings of Little Stars also receive a special certificate in recognition of the support they give.
