Bootcamp challenge helps Sunderland hospice

Chris Tatters from Phit Bootcamp about to take members of his team on a charity mobile bootcamp up the coast from Roker raising money for St Benedict's Hospice.

Chris Tatters from Phit Bootcamp about to take members of his team on a charity mobile bootcamp up the coast from Roker raising money for St Benedict's Hospice.

SUPER-fit bootcampers helped raise money for a Wearside hospice.

Members of Phit Solutions bootcamp took on a seven-mile charity challenge on Sunderland seafront.

About 18 dedicated keep-fitters braved strong winds and sea spray to workout their way along the coastline, from Roker to South Shields and back.

They burnt off calories and raised pounds by exercising with giant tyres and ropes, while collecting donations in a bright yellow bucket.

Bootcamp members, who regularly work out on Roker beach and clifftops, hope to raise hundreds for St Benedict’s Hospice in Monkwearmouth.

Bootcamp leader Chris Tatters dreamt up the Seven Mile Moving Bootcamp idea, along with founder Tony Rodda.

Personal trainer Chris, who has worked for the fitness company for seven months, said: “It’s just an idea we had to raise money for charity and everyone was really keen.

“My mam’s best friend, Glyn Wick, died at St Benedict’s Hospice about two or three months ago from chest cancer, so we decided to raise money for them.

“We’ve got a target of £500, so any more than that would be great and we’ve got about £300 already within a week.

“I’m hoping we’ll do it in under two hours if I push them hard enough.”

Plans to build a £12.3million replacement for St Benedict’s were revealed almost 12 months ago.

The new centre near Cherry Knowle Hospital is set to include 14 inpatient beds and provision for 16 patients in its day-care facility.

There will also be a top regional educational facility which will provide training to specialist and general staff to continue improving patient care across the North East.
