Boost for city centre proposals

PLANNERS have backed a development which could safeguard and generate up to 800 jobs.

The proposals to build office blocks, cafes, a tourism information centre and public square on the site of the ice rink in Freeman’s Quay, Durham, would also include an Archimedes screw which would help power the buildings.

A riverside garden is also included in the plans.

Durham County Council planning officers have recommended the plans on the grounds it will be a sustainable development, which will regenerate a neglected and prominent site in the city and retain and generate jobs.

They say the buildings would be in keeping with Durham would not impact on the Durham Castle and Cathedral World Heritage Site.

The plans will be discussed at a meeting of the County Planning Committee next Tuesday, March 5, at 2pm in the council chamber at County Hall, Durham City.
