AN investigation has been launched into a match involving a North East darts player.

Davey “The Badger” Prins, from Peterlee, lost 3-0 to Will van de Wiel in the World Darts Championship.

But bookmakers suspended betting on the January 8 game after “unusual betting patterns.”

William Hill and Ladbrokes are now refusing to pay out on the winning bets, as the Gambling Commission and the British Darts Organisation (BDO) investigate the matter.

However, Mr Prins said: “I have heard the rumours and I have got nothing to hide.

“I can see how it does not look good, but I have done nothing wrong.

“All I can do is play my darts and try and win.”

The BDO said: “We have been advised that there are betting patterns relating to (the game) that may warrant further investigation.”

A Ladbrokes spokesman said: “This would not normally be the type of match on which sizeable bets are placed, but big sums were going on correct score bets of 3-0 and 3-1 to Van de Wiel.”
