Police are set to conduct a final search for missing Durham University student Luke Pearce on Saturday night. The 19-year-old, from Hounslow, was reported missing on Sunday evening.

THE family of missing Durham University student Luke Pearce have been informed after a body was found in the River Wear this morning.

The 19-year-old was reported missing a week ago today after a night out with friends in Durham City.

He had been drinking with friends in Jimmy Allen’s bar, in Elvet Bridge, last Saturday night and was last seen around 1.30am on Sunday morning, walking along the river bank from

Baths Bridge towards the bandstand and Durham Amateur Rowing Club.

Members of the rowing club reported seeing the body in the river on the side closest to the A690, this morning.

Durham Police said there had been no formal identification, but Mr Pearce’s family had been informed. A post-mortem examination is expected to be held later to establish a formal cause of death. Officers said there do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances.

The disappearance of the first-year engineering student, from Hounslow, west London, sparked a major search operation, including with under-water sonar equipment.

On Saturday evening officers were joined by members of the university rugby club, handing out flyers with Luke’s photo.
