Beware of scam

HOUSEHOLDERS have been told to shut the door on scamsters who have tried to sign up residents to a false lottery they say is in the name of injured soldiers.

Police have been contacted by residents in Murton after answering knocks to a man and woman claiming to be collectors for Help for Heroes.

However, the charity has said while it holds collections in stores and shopping centres in addition to its fund-raising events, its supporters do not knock on doors or hold a lottery as part of its campaign to help veterans.

A spokeswoman for Seaham Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “If anyone comes to the door, make sure they have a photo ID and documents and you should never give out your bank or personal details.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
