SADDLE-sore cyclists brought in vital cash to help out a Sunderland hospice appeal.

More than 75 people took part in a seaside ride from Seaburn to Marsden Grotto in South Tyneside and then back.

The effort was in aid of Grace House Hospice, in Southwick, which will soon be caring for sick and terminally ill youngsters.

The group began the trek at The Cliff pub in Roker, after the venue’s landlord Keith Steele came up with the idea of putting on the event following discussions with organiser David Middleton.

Entertainment and a barbecue were put on for the riders for their return at lunchtime.

It is thought that several thousands of pounds have been raised.

Those taking part had to raise a minimum of £30 each in sponsorship, while Barclays Bank pledged to match-fund up to £1,000 and bookmaker William Hill has said it will match-fund the total generated.

David said: “The weather was great, the coastline looked lovely, but the best sight of all was family and friends enjoying themselves for a great cause.

“The turnout was fantastic and the feedback to Keith and me was very positive.

“Everyone enjoyed the day immensely and can’t wait until next year to do it again.

“I want to thank Grace House, Keith, his family, staff and everyone who took part.

“I am so grateful for your time and support, and from the bottom of my heart, a massive thank you to you all.”

Sally Coatsworth, who works at Anthony James Lettings in Pallion, took part with her son Adam, five, a pupil at Cleadon Primary School.

Sally said: “I am really proud of Adam, he had no hesitation wanting to take part.

“We’ve raised more than £200 already and I am delighted to be part of one of the businesses supporting Grace House.”
