Armed police unit called to Souter Lighthouse

ARMED police officers were sent out to a coastal beauty spot after reports that guns were being fired.

The response team were sent to Souter Lighthouse in Whitburn after members of the public called in to say they had heard gunshots on Wednesday night.

The Northumbria Police helicopter was also deployed to scour the scene.

However, no-one was found.

A spokeswoman for the force said: “At 8.06pm on Wednesday, May 21, police were informed that four men were thought to be firing shots in the area of Souter Point Lighthouse, in Whitburn.

“Officers attended and an extensive search was carried out, assisted by the police helicopter, with a negative result.

“There were no men identified as being in the area.”
