DRINKERS can try out a Stiff Tackle at a beer festival this week.
The Six Nations-inspired brew, from the Maxim Brewery, is one of a host of cask ales and ciders on offer from Thursday.
The Durham branch of real-ale group Camra and Durham Rugby Club have joined forces for their a first joint spring beer festival, which runs until Sunday, in Green Lane.
Nick Young, treasurer of Durham Camra, hopes it will be the first of many real ale festivals in the area over the next year.
“We have all the equipment now for putting on these festivals, including an 8ft by 7ft 6in bar that we constructed.”
He added: “It’s a great opportunity to meet new people and to go on outings to pubs that you might not consider visiting on your own.
“But also, thanks in part to the efforts and promotion from the local Camra branch, our members are being invited to more and more openings of new pubs.
“New members are encouraged to bring their own particular talents, from accounting to joinery, to help the team run future festivals”.
Dave Best, from Durham Rugby Club, said: “It’s an adventure for us.
“We have recently won Club of the Year, and this is something different for us to try.
“We are dipping our toes in the water here, and if it is a success, we could look at hosting smaller ones in the summer.”
Entry will be £2 and beer will be £2.50 per pint.
