90 and still practicing yoga + VIDEO

A GREAT grandad is shaping up to celebrate his 90th birthday today.

John Richardson still practices yoga twice a week, as well as attending a bums ‘n’ tums fitness class, and goes to the gym.

The father-of-two, and grandfather-of-three, also has three great grandchildren, and took up the sport when he was 72, following the death of his wife Janet, aged 67.

John, of Dene House Road, Seaham, appeared in the Echo when he was 83 and taking on six exercises classes a week.

The widower, also known as Morris, a member of the Seaham Leisure Centre, pumped iron, used the gym regularly, and swam at Crowtree Leisure Centre.

At the time, the retired miner, who will celebrate his birthday with family and friends today, said: “When I lost my wife I went into exercise.

“I enjoy keeping fit and being healthy and I enjoy life. I have no problem doing it and I look forward to it.”

John now practices iyengar yoga at the Puma Centre, Silksworth, and hatha yoga at Seaham Leisure Centre.

“I’m still enjoying it,” he said today.

“It gets me out and it keeps me active. I’ve been doing yoga for about 18 years now. I still do bums and tums and I’ve got the gym as a last resort.

“I work out about four times a week.”

Daughter, Jennifer Millington, said: “He is an inspiration. He mixes with all ages and keeps mentally and physically fit. I think it keeps him mentally alert, which is very important.

“He is very shy but we wanted people to know how active he still is.

“When he was in the Echo in 2006, the article was to show how older people can still be active. My dad is 90 and still going, so it shows it is true.”
