It was water, water everywhere as rain-soaked crowds stood to watch a spectacular display of fireworks and light projections to launch Sunderland's £20million Aquatic Centre.
The wet weather and biting cold did not deter the 5,000-strong crowd which gathered outside the new complex at Stadium Park for last night's event.
And the centre opened its doors to the public at 6.30am today, welcoming the first visitors through the door.
The outdoor spectacular began with an aerial acrobat swimming and twisting through the air suspended from a crane high above the centre, before appearing to splash into the roof, with light effects simulating a ripple effect across the building.
This started a 30-minute light and firework display, with the centre becoming an aquatic scene melting into images and sounds of Sunderland's maritime history.
Projections of whales spouting fireworks from their blow-holes, images of vintage shipping posters and sound bites of shipyard workers were just some of the rich tapestry displayed on the side of the Aquatic Centre.
There were also performers becoming human fountains as they spurted water from hoses 15m off the stage.
Robin Morley, director of Magnet Events, who organised the 140,000 spectacular, said he thought the event would be "a moment to remember".
"It was a bit wet, a bit rainy and a bit cold, but the good, sturdy Sunderland audience came out and had a good time.
"It's not just about fireworks and light projections, it's actually saying this is a fantastic building, a landmark building in Sunderland
part of the regeneration and branding of the city."
The Aquatic Centre, which features a 50m Olympic pool, diving tank and Wellness Centre gym, was chosen to feature in the Pre-Games Training Camp Guide for the London 2012 Olympics, along with Sunderland University.
Before the outdoor launch spectacular, members of swimming clubs and community groups had joined VIP guests at a special indoor swimming and diving extravaganza.
City of Sunderland Amateur Swimming Club, now based at the Aquatic Centre, and South Sunderland Swim Club joined dancers from Sunderland University and groups from across the North East in putting on the show.
Hosted by sports presenter Roger Tames, the indoor event also featured a special video message from Olympic organiser and retired athlete Sebastian Coe.
He said in his message: "This will be a fantastic facility for local people. It will form a very serious part of the Pre-games Training Camp Guide."
There were also speeches from council leader Bob Symonds and Mayor of Sunderland Les Scott.
Speaking today, Coun Symonds said: "It was a fabulous night for the city and a tremendous response from the public who turned up in such numbers despite the bad weather, and we thank them very much for that.
"The rain didn't dampen their spirits and it shows how much it means to the people of Sunderland to have a world-class facility that puts the city on the sporting map but also is for everyone to use and enjoy.
"There was also a great response from the swimming and community clubs who were invited to see the facilities inside the centre and who will lead the way in bringing people to use the Aquatic Centre now and in the future."
