Officers held back Newcastle fans outside while Sunderland supporters entered the train station.
Chief Superintendent Neil Mackay, of Northumbria Police's operations department, said about 700 Black Cat fans were trying to break through the police line to get at them.
NUFC fans were hurling bottles, coins and glasses at officers attempting to keep the rival fans apart.
They were eventually moved away by officers in full riot gear.
Chief Supt Mackay, who has praised Sunderland fans who travelled to the match by coach, said: "The majority of those who came by train were intent on causing trouble."
Fourteen arrests were made at Central Station, nine in and around St James's Park and nine in other areas of the city.
Officers will be checking CCTV footage in a bid to catch those responsible for the violence.
The 32 who were arrested are thought to be aged from their 20s to 40s. Of those, 14 have been charged, two cautioned, six received fixed penalty notices and a further 10 have been bailed.
Those charged were for offences including throwing missiles, disorderly behaviour, pitch encroachment and drunk and disorderly.
Chief Supt Mackay said: "They are not young kids, they should be mature men. It's only a football match at the end of the day."
