1977: Doctor Who visits Sunderland + SLIDESHOW
Do you remember when 'Dr Who' stopped Sunderland traffic?
On Oct 22 1977, Tom Baker, the nation's favourite on-screen time traveller (with the nation's longest scarf) visited Sunderland.
Here's what we reported all those 30 years ago: "Sunderland town centre traffic came to a standstill today as hundreds of shoppers and children lined the streets to watch the arrival of 'Dr Who' (actor Tom Baker).
"A procession led by a pipe band made its way from the station along Fawcett Street and John Street to Joplings Store.
"Baker was kept busy signing autographs for young admirers as crowds gathered to watch the parade. Children dressed as fairytale characters, danced along route waving and singing to provide a carnival-like atmosphere".
"Baker feels a "great responsibilty for his young audience and at every oppurtunity goes on the road to meet children at schools and promote the show."
The day seemed to be a great success and the Sunderland fans clearly inspired the actor, who made another appearance two years later. In October 1979 he told the Echo: "The show gives so much to me so I like giving something back."
