£25,000 handout for good causes

A cash pot of £25,000 will be dished out to good causes this summer in the last Back On The Map People's Fund.

The X-Factor style voting allows residents of Hendon and Sunderland's East End to decide which worthy community causes should be awarded from the money.

The last-ever People's Fund will take place later this year, as Back On The Map enters its final financial year.

In the last round of awards, more than 3,000 was handed out to eight community groups, including 399 for a cat rescue in Hendon and 400 to start a football team for the African community in Sunderland.

The People's Fund was one of five pilots funded by the Government to trial participatory budgeting in 2004.

Every year, Back On The Map allocates 50,000 to the People's Fund, in which three events are held every year – two with a pot of 15,000 and one with 20,000.

By 2011, the People's Fund will have allocated 350,000 to community projects in Hendon and the East End of Sunderland.

Electronic voting pads are used by residents to decide how the money should be divided.

For more information about applying to the fund, or to be part of the audience voting on projects, contact Pat Johnston, tel. 568 9310, or call into the Community Link Shop in Villette Road, Hendon.
