A NEW gadget is lighting the way to better health as part of a £140,000 community centre makeover.

The investment has gone into the Robin Todd Centre, South Hetton.

Its former sports hall has been split to form a new gym upstairs, and part of the ground floor turned into a multi-use room and features a sensory wall.

It can be used as a fitness challenge, where competitors can tot up scores as they hit lit targets, and a dance floor when it hosts discos.

Centre bosses decided to focus the new gym equipment on cardiovascular kit, with bikes and treadmills.

Councillor Robin Todd, who is on the county and parish councils, is chairman of the community association which takes his name.

“We’ve refurbished the centre and it looks excellent,” he said. “They’ve done a really good job.

“The feedback we’ve had so far has been very good.”

The gym and other facilities were unveiled as part of an afternoon of activities at the centre.

The opening was performed by Anna Lynch, director of public health in County Durham.
