SUNDERLAND’S lifeboat volunteers were called out yesterday after reports of an abandoned jetski floating in the Wear.
The RNLI inshore lifeboat was launched, along with the rescue team from Sunderland Coastguard, after police received reports of the jetski drifting close to the Golden Lion pub at South Hylton at about 5.30pm.
Paul Nicholson, senior helmsman at Sunderland RNLI, said: “Shortly after launching we were informed the two riders were safe and well after getting ashore unaided.
“We were then asked to continue up river to locate and recover the drifting ski to prevent it becoming a hazard to other river users.
“It appears the man and woman who were riding the ski got into difficulties after losing the key while trying to recover the woman from the water. They decided to swim to the shore to get assistance.”
He urged jetski users to carry some form of communication to make emergency calls.
